Michew, January 9, 2008 (Michew) - Some 25,000 farmers are engaged in vegetable and fruits development through irrigation in Ofla Woreda of Southern Tigray, the Woreda agriculture and rural development office said.Office Deputy Head, Mulugeta Berihe told ENA on Tuesday that the farmers are developing vegetable and fruits by harnessing 600 ponds and diverting eight rivers.
The farmers are developing potatoes, onion, cabbage, red paper, organge, banana, lemon on 5,000 hectares of land, he said.
Some 274, 000 quintals of products are expected to be harvested in four months time. The farmers are expecting to get over 66 million Birrfrom sale of their products.
Mulugeta said farmers in the Woreda harvested 140,000 quintals of vegetables and fruit and earned 39 million Birr last year.
