Over 230,000 hectares of land being covered with crops
Bahir Dar, February 27, 2008 (Bahir Dar) - Over 230,000 hectares of land developed through irrigation is being covered with crops in Amhara State during the current dry season, the state agriculture and rural development bureau said.

Public relations head with the bureau, Shiferaw Tesfaye told ENA on Tuesday that more than 776,000 farmers have so far covered over 200,000 hectares of the stated area of land

with fruits and vegetables.

The farmers developed the land by harnessing rivers, and springs.

Improved varieties of crops, fruits and vegetables, fertilizers and water pumping machines were distributed among the farmers, the head said.

Over 22 million quintals of crops are expected to be harvested from the area of land developed through irrigation, Shiferaw said

The state had harvested nearly 20 million quintals output from over 253,000 hectares of land developed through irrigation during the previous dry season.
