Dessie, February 4, 2008 (Dessie) - The North East district office of the Ethiopian Electric Power Corporation (EEPCo) said it is undertaking activities to electrify 49 towns during the current budget year (began July 8).Region office director, Ferealem Kure told ENA that the region eyes at electrifying rural woredas and towns in Amhara and parts of Afar region.
The project will enable the corporation meet power needs of investment projects launched in the stated regions.
The government will allot substantial amount of fund for the project, whose contracts had been awarded to local and foreign contractors.
Currently, expansion and maintenance of existing lines are being carried out with a view to benefiting 23 new customers.
Some 34 towns and rural localities were electrified during the previous year through the district office which consumed over 50 million birr.
