Addis Ababa, February 4, 2008 (Addis Ababa) - The 112th anniversary of the Adowa victory would be warmly celebrated throughout Ethiopia with assortment of befitting programs, Ethiopian Millennium Festival National Secretariat said. The nation would not have been able to celebrate its unique calendar-based new millennium had it not been for the Adowa victory, it was noted.Director General of the Secretariat, Seyoum Bereded said Adowa victory, which is a great honor for all freedom fighters and African people in particular would be celebrated on March 1 and 2, 2008 in Adowa town of Tigray State.
The Director General was speaking at a press conference here on Monday.
All the necessary preparations are well in progress to celebrate the Victory Day colorfully, according to Seyoum.
He expressed his beliefs that the celebration would inspire the current generation to discharge its responsibilities to transfer the history of its forefathers to the next generation by keeping its unity.
Symposium, exhibition, cultural dances and parade would be staged as part of the celebration that would be transmitted live on ETV.
Historians would present seven research papers aiming at how to utilize Adowa for the country’s economic development thereby enabling it play a vital role in the development, peace and democratization process.
Besides peace and security activities members of the National Defense force would also dispense fliers from helicopters.
Various historical places including martyrs' tombs in Adowa and its surroundings would also be visited.
The Adowa victory obtained on 1st March 1896 is the mother of all the series of victories Africans in general and Ethiopians in particular have achieved in their history. It has been a source of pride for the oppressed people of Africa it has also been an inspiration for freedom fighters in Africa and elsewhere.
