Addis Ababa, April 28, 2008 (Addis Ababa) - The out-going Chairperson of the African Union (AU) Commission, Alpha Oumar Konare handed over his chairmanship to his successor Jean Ping here on Monday.Prime Minister Meles Zenawi lauded the contribution of the out-going chairperson and other staff members of the commission in the efforts luanched to strengthen the commission.
President Jakaya Kikwete of Tanzania, who is also the current chairman of the AU, said on the occasion that out-going officials of the commission have done their level best to strengthen the organization.
Kikwete, who arrived here on Sunday to attend the handing over ceremony, said Prof. Konare and his colleagues have worked towards the renaissance of Africa.
He said Prof. Konare should be remembered as a good child of Africa as he has carried out remarkable activities to strengthen AU.
Kikwete called on the incoming officials to shoulder the responsibilities to accomplish the task launched by the outgoing officials. He also urged them to enhance the existing relations among AU member and other countries as well as international organizations.
The new officials are responsible to find solutions to problems related to the continent, which have not yet been solved, Kikwete said.
The continent is affected by two problems, food shortage and the increasing cost of petroleum, unless these problems are solved, the registered economic growth of the continent would be in danger, he added.
The officials have a major responsibility to make the voice of AU be heard by the international forum.
Meles on his part expressed appreciation to Prof. Konare for his contributions to make AU internationally recognized.
The Prime Minister said Ethiopia is ready to provide the necessary support and work in collaboration with the incoming officials.
Ethiopia is happy to host various conferences beginning from the establishment of the OAU until the formation of the AU, Meles pointed out.
