Ministry says 2.7 million people got potable water service in rural areas
Addis Ababa, April 15, 2008 (Addis Ababa) - The Minister of Water Resource said some 2.7 million people in rural areas have become beneficiaries of potable water service during the last nine months.

Presenting the nine month performance report of the ministry to the House of People Representatives on Tuesday Asfaw Dinagamo said many water facilities in rural areas have been constructed by the federal and regional governments and NGOs during the reported period.

He said emergency rehabilitation and expansion works that benefit over 105,000 residents have also been carried out in 31 towns.

Besides, the Minister said 160 small water facilities study and design works were conducted in more than 30 small and big towns, while the expansion and improvement works were carried out to improve water supply in urban areas.

Asfaw said construction and expansion work that benefited 500,000 residents have been carried out in 60 towns across the nation.

The Minister said his ministry is working topush potable water coverage of the country to 62.5 percent at the end of this budget year from 55 percent at present.

The Minister indicated in his report that attention has been given to irrigation development, feasibility study and design work.

The Minister said Kessem-Tendaho dam and irrigation development, Koka irrigation and Rib dam constructions are major projects being carried out currently.

The Minister said over half a billion birr has been incurred for the execution of the projects.

Asfaw gave replies to questions posed by the members of the parliament.
