Institute discovers high-yielding maize, rice varieties
Gambela, April 11, 2008 (Gambella) - The Gambela Agricultural Research Institute said it has discovered high-yielding maize and rice seeds, which are suitable for the agro-ecology of the region.

Local farmers are expected to reap over 50 quintals of output using the improved maize and rice seed varieties, which is three times more than the output of the normal seed species, institute deputy director, Belayneh Ayalew told ENA recently.

The director said the new seed varieties are expected to be released soon after approval by the seed endorsement committee.

Meanwhile, he said, the institute also said it has been distributing over 300 quintals of improved crop and oil seed varieties, which are discovered by the institute earlier, among local farmers living in 12 woredas of the region.
