Center calls on government, public to fulfill needs of children with Autism
Addis Ababa, April 9, 2008 (Addis Ababa) - Joy Center for Children with autism called upon the government and public at large to attach due attention to fulfill the needs of children with autism.

In a press conference she gave in connection with World Autism Awareness Day, Centre Managing Director, Zemi Yenus said as autism needs special attentions, all stakeholders should exert coordinated effort.

She said the Centre established in 1994 E.C has been striving to improve the lives of children with autism. It is now providing services to 60 children.

Accordingly, the Managing Director said more than 85 percent of the children's behavior has been modified enormously and a 13 years old girl started to talk.

The establishment of the Centre has proved the negative attitude of people towards children with Autism.

The UN General Assembly last November declared April 2 as World Autism Awareness Day in a bid to provide a landmark opportunity to focus attention on a global epidemic that affects about 35 million people worldwide, highlighting the need to help improve their lives.

April 2 marks the beginning of Autism Month and is meant to raise awareness about autism and encourage research and early childhood screening.
