Addis Ababa, September 27, 2007 (Addis Ababa) - The Ethiopian government is committed to enroll all school-age children in formal education during the current academic year, the Ministry of Education said.While holding discussions with the visiting Abyssinian Baptist Church delegation members, Education Minister Dr. Sintayehu Woldemichael said on Tuesday the government is set realize the Millennium Development Goals in the education sector.
Necessary promotional activities have been underway for the same cause, the minister said.
The national education system is designed in such a way that the country would able to register fast economic growth, speed up democratization process, and ensure fair distribution of income.
The new education and training policy enabled the education sector development program to be quite fruitful, Dr. Sentayehu said.
The policy has also enabled the country to achieve satisfactory results, he said, the number of students enrolled in primary schools at present has reached 14 million from only two million in 1983 E.C.
Secondary education enrollment has also increased to 36 percent at present from only 2 percent some years back.
The ministry is striving to improve the quality of education as well, according to the minister.
Head of the delegation, Rev. Calvin O. Butts on his part said various members of the Abyssinian Baptist Church are desirous to come and work in Ethiopia, especially in the education sector.
The delegation, which is here in connection with the celebration of the new Ethiopian millennium, held thorough discussions with the minister.
