Addis Ababa, October 31, 2007 (Addis Ababa) - President Girma Woldegiorgis stressed that Ethiopia should be ready to adapt to the possible climate change that could occur during the new Ethiopian millennium.President Girma said global warming, irregular and heavy rainfall, and other results of climate change would have negative impact on agriculture development, biodiversity, water resource, and ecology of the nation.
President Girma made the remark here on Wednesday at the opening of a three-day ‘Green Forum 2007’ event.
The on-going efforts in reducing poverty would contribute a lot to withstand the ill effects of climate change, the president said.
Poverty reduction as well as other development policies and strategies of the incumbent Ethiopian government play fundamental role in curbing the impact of climate change, he said.
President Girma on the occasion put his signature on a document called "Africa Complain on Climate Change, " which is initiated by Green Forum 2007.
The document calls on world leaders to support efforts toward reducing global warming and emission of green house gases, and requests industrialized countries to raise fund to victims of climate change.
The objective of the forum is to provide information to civil society organizations, government offices, scholars, and other segments of the society on the issue of climate change in Ethiopia.
The event also includes screening documentary films depicting impact of climate change in five African countries.
