Addis Ababa, October 31, 2007 (Addis Ababa) - Deputy Secretary-General of the UN, Asha-Rose Migiro will chair the 8th regional consultation meeting to be held on 5 Nov. 2007 where UN agencies and organizations review their work in support of NEPAD over the past year. Many heads of UN agencies and chiefs of regional economic communities in Africa are expected to take part in meeting, according to NEPAD’s weekly newspaper.
The General Assembly had mandated all UN agencies to align their activities in Africa with NEPAD priorities and around thematic clusters covering all the priorities as per the UN Resolution 57/7 of the 4 Nov. 2002.
A special unit at the Economic Commission for Africa strategically coordinates the activities of all the agencies.
The meeting will review the working of the Cluster System, the UN 10-year capacity building program for the African Union, and discuss a joint AU-UN paper on post-conflict recovery and reconstruction taking Southern Sudan, Burundi, and Sierra Leone as case studies.
