Konare urges all Sudanese parties to constructively participate in peace talks
Addis Ababa, October 26, 2007 (Addis Ababa) - The Chairperson of the Commission of the African Union (AU), Alpha Omar Konare appealed to all Sudanese parties to constructively participate in the peace talks scheduled to start in Sirte, Libya on 27 October 2007, under the leadership of the AU and United Nations (UN) Special Envoys, Salim Ahmed Salim, and Jan Eliasson.

Konare urges all the Sudanese parties to demonstrate the necessary sprit of compromise and extend full cooperation to the AU and UN, AU said in a statment it sent to ENA.

The chairperson of the commission emphasizes that the talks are a unique opportunity the parties must seize to bring about lasting peace and reconciliation in Darfur.

He reiterates his appeal to all parties concerned to refrain from any act of violence on the ground and from any other act likely to undermine the peace talks.

The chairperson stresses the determination of the AU, working with the UN Security Council, to take appropriate action against any party that would attempt to undermine the peace talks and the ongoing efforts by the AU and UN.
