274.8 million Birr road project underway in Oromia State
Oromia State, October 26, 2007 (Addis Ababa) - Construction and maintenance of roads is underway in various parts of Oromia State at a cost of 274.8 million Birr during the current Ethiopian budget year, the state rural roads authority said.

Authority General-Manager, Berhanu Bekele told journalists on Thursday that the road project aims to construct 370-km new rural roads. It includes the study of 15 road projects.

Berhanu said 376-km road was under construction in resettlement sites.

He said activities were underway to upgrade 370-km rural road and maintain 4,668-km additional road in various parts of the state.

The roads interconnect various woredas and zones.

He said the study, construction and maintenance of road projects had been undertaken at a cost of over 204 million Birr during the past Ethiopian budget year in the state.

The projects carried out during the reported period include the construction of 260-km rural road and the study of 12 road projects.

Some 1,000-km road was also constructed in areas surrounding resettlement sites with the budget allocated by the regional food security and disaster prevention and preparedness commission.

Some 4,400-km rural road was repaired with the budget secured from roads fund, he said.
