Addis Ababa, October 23, 2007 (Addis Ababa) - The campaign organized under the theme “Stand Up Against Poverty” was launched here on Tuesday. The campaign aimed at creating public awareness as well as encouraging all stakeholders to actively take part in attaining food security, right to get balanced diet, and fighting poverty.Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Addisu Legesse, ambassadors, representatives of UN Family in Ethiopia attended part of the campiaign orgnized here at the Exhibition Center.
Speaking on the occasion Addisu said the government has been working with the UN in the fight against poverty.
Conserving and developing natural resources in a sustainable manner should get prime attention to attain the goal, he said.
Addisu opened an exhibition organized by UN Family in Ethiopia in connection with the campaign at the Exhibition Center.
Representative of World Food Program, Dr. Mafa Chipeta on his part said government, nongovernmental organizations, and international development agencies should assist efforts of fighting poverty.
The UN would further strengthen its support to Africa to extricate itself from poverty.
The representative urged all stakeholders to discharge duties and responsibilities to realize the goal of the campaign.
The campaign is organized as part of the Ethiopian millennium celebrations.
The Ethiopian Millennium Celebration National Council Secretariat in collaboration with United Nations Family in Ethiopia organized the campaign.
