Addis Ababa, October 14, 2007 (Addis Ababa) - The speedy economic and social development of the country requires a new system of calibration service, the Ministry of Trade and Industry said.State Minister of Trade and Industry, Tadesse Haile said improved and new services in quality and standards are pillars of manufacturing and service industries.
The state minister made the statement here on Sunday at the handing-over ceremony of ‘a mobile calibration’ and in connection with the celebration of the 38th World Standards Day.
The global village is in a continuous competition these days, he said, the quality of products and services has become the order of the day to win the competition.
Tadesse said organizations like the Quality and Standards Authority of Ethiopia (QSAE) are expected to up-to-date their services in order to satisfy customers.
The new mobile calibration service, which is the first of its kind in the country, will definitely contribute to the economic and social development of the nation.
QSAE has accredited Mass and Temperature Calibration and Micro-biology Laboratory.
QSAE Director-General, Messai Girma on the occasion said one of the pillars of a national quality infrastructure is institutionalizing metrological system at national level.
Messai said QSAE is providing traceable calibration service and assuming the custodianship of the national primary measurement standards in Ethiopia.
Quality Infrastructure Manager, Erik Ruh also said properly calibrated equipment provides confidence that products or services meet their specifications.
Calibration meets a lot of requirements, he said, it optimizes resources, saves exporting firms from indirect compliance costs, assures consistency, promote customer acceptance of a product, and facilitates fair trade.
Ambassador of Germany to Ethiopia, Dr. Claas Knoop said the establishment of QSAE shows that the Ethiopian government and the Ethiopian industry appreciate the importance of a good quality infrastructure.
The ambassador said calibration has become more important than ever for Ethiopian producers in order to overcome trade barriers.
