Addis Ababa, October 6, 2007 (Addis Ababa) - Ethiopian Horticulture Producers-Exporters Association (EHPEA) said the nation is expected to earn 125 million US dollars from the export of flowers at the end of 2007.EHPEA Chairman, Tsegaye Abebe told ENA on Saturday that Ethiopia secured 90 million US dollars from the sector during the last six months.
The stated sum was obtained from export of the product to Central Europe, Saudi Arabia, Japan, Russia, Norwegian, and Finland, he said.
The chairman said some 35 million US dollars would to be secured from the sector during the coming three months.
Though the sector a new one in Ethiopia, it’s growing rapidly, he said, foreign investors are coming to Ethiopia to invest in the sector.
The chairman attributed to the success mainly to the attractive investment policy of the nation and the existing peace and stability in the country.
According to the chairman, flower producers and exporters are becoming more competitive in the international market owing to the assistance and incentives of the Ethiopian government.
Besides the grace period for tax payment, tax exemption on imported equipments and government’s swift response to problems in the sector has been attracting entrepreneurs to invest in the sector.
The association has 80 members out of which 69 ones have begun exporting their products, the chairman said.
He said the sector has so far created jobs to 50,000 women. About 75 percent of the workers are women.
The sector is expanding across the country, he said, the association is exerting utmost effort to expand the sector in Tigray and Amhara States during the coming five years.
