Ensuring political transparency in Ethiopia key to development: Chancellor Merkel
Addis Ababa, October 5, 2007 (Addis Ababa) - German Chancellor, Dr. Angela Merkel said ensuring political transparency and respecting human rights in Ethiopia would play pivotal role to register development in the political arena.

Merkel said safeguarding human rights and granting freedom of expression for opposition political parties in Ethiopia would lay firm foundation for sustainable development.

Chancellor Merkel made the statement here on Thursday while giving a joint statement with Prime Minister, Meles Zenawi.

Merkel said Ethiopia could reduce poverty through strengthening efforts geared toward building democratic system across the nation.

After holding discussions, Dr. Merkel and Prime Minister Meles Zenawi decided to further enhance all-rounded cooperation between Ethiopia and Germany.

Dr. Angela Merkel commends the health policy of the Ethiopian government. She called on the government on the occasion to further strengthen on-going efforts toward building the capacity of women.

Diplomatic relations between Ethiopia and Germany dates back to more than 100 years. Trade and economic ties between the two sisterly countries have reached to a higher level than ever.
