Ethiopia never interferes in internal affairs of Somalia: MoI
Addis Ababa, November 28, 2007 (Addis Ababa) - Ethiopia is never to interfere in the internal affairs of Somalia beyond assisting the Transitional Federal Government (TFG) and the peace-loving people of Somalia in efforts toward ensuring a lasting peace and stability in that country, the Ministry of Information said.

In its statement sent to ENA, the ministry said on Wednesday that Ethiopia is not entitled to interfere in the activities of TFG in internal administration, legislation as well as in the appointment and resignation of officials in Somalia.

The ministry said only the people of Somalia, government, and the parliament have the right to elect, appoint, and sack the leaders of Somalia.

Ethiopia has never interfered in any way in the resignation of former Prime Minster Ali Mohammed Gedi and in the appointment of the new Prime Minister, Nur Hassen Hussein, though reports from some media and other bodies implied to be so, the statement said.

The international community should understand realities on the ground lest they should be confuse and mislead by such reports since the reports implied that the TFG, the parliament, and the people of Somalia are incompetent to pass decisions on their internal affairs.

Disseminating such groundless information will impede on-going activities in ensuring a lasting peace and stability in Somalia and the efforts of the TFG in discharging its duties and responsibilities, the statement said.

The ministry reaffirmed that Ethiopia will continue playing its level best in assisting the efforts of the TFG in bringing about a lasting peace and stability in that country.
