Britain committed to support Ethiopia's development efforts: Ambassador Dewar
Addis Ababa, November 27, 2007 (Addis Ababa) - Britain would further scale up its support for the attainment of Ethiopia's development goals, Bob Dewar the departing Ambassador of Britain to Ethiopia said.

The development support volume Britain provides to Ethiopia currently hits 120 million pounds.

Ambassador Dewar, in an interview with ENA on Monday, said that the development activities taking place in Ethiopia are hopeful.

Ethiopia is on the right development track, Ambassador Dewar said and added that Britain is a partner country that would provide huge support for the accomplishment of the nation's development goals.

In an effort launched to alleviate poverty in Ethiopia, enormous success has been registered in various sectors, particularly in health and education.

The development assistance Britain provides to Ethiopia, that currently amounts 120 million pounds, is focused on expansion of infrastructural health, education, rural development facilities, as well as provision of potable water.

The Ambassador said Britain has been striving to execute activities that would enable to bring change in the areas of capacity building, experience sharing and knowledge transfer.

Most of the products Ethiopia exports to Britain are agricultural products, he said and added that various measures are being taken to improve the trade exchange volume between the two countries.

The volume of Ethiopian flowers entering to the British market has been increasing from time to time.

Ethiopian Yirgachefe coffee has got a wide acceptance in British market, according to the Ambassador.

As a country with immense tourist attraction sites, there is nothing that hold back Ethiopia from being a destination to British tourists.

Ambassador Dewar appreciated the Ethiopian government’s commitment to restrain global warming. The rural community is expected to play a huge role in protecting the environment, he said.

An agreement providing for investment protection that will enable British investors to be engaged in various sectors in Ethiopia would be signed between the two countries early in 2008, according to the Ambassador.

Ambassador Dewar wished a prosperous year for Ethiopia and its people.
