Addis Ababa, November 17, 2007 (Addis Ababa) - Chairperson of the AU Commission, Alpha Omar Konare in consultation with the UN Secretary-General, Ban Ki-Moon on Friday appointed the South Africa Assistant Police Commissioner, Michael J. Fryer as Police Commissioner of the AU-UN Hybrid operation in Darfur (UNAMID), AU said. The Police Commissioner will have responsibility to the implementation of all police aspects of the mandate of UNAMID, AU said in a statement it sent to ENA on Friday. Commissioner Fryer has headed the Specialized Operations Division in the South African Police Service since Sep. 2004.
