Amhara to inject 108 million Birr to rural water supply program
Addis Ababa, July 31, 2007 (Bahir Dar) - The Amhara State rural water supply and environmental protection program on Monday said it has earmarked an over 108 million Birr budget to expand the provisions of safe drinking water over the coming four years.

An agreement was singed between the state's finance and economic development bureau and the Amhara credit and saving institution to effectively transfer of the budget to various woredas where the program is to be carried out.

Signing the agreement, director of the program, Mulatu Ferede said the program, funded by the government of Finland, would be launched in 14 woredas of east and west Gojjam, South Gondar and Awi zones of the state.

He said the program includes the constructions of 3000 water facilities that would benefit over five million people residing in the woredas.

The program would also provide trainings on issues of natural resource development, capacity building, gender and environmental and personal hygiene.

The program has benefited over 1.5 million people from similar projects carried out since 1987 E.C, he said.
