Konare leaves for Sudan
Addis Ababa, December 24, 2007 (Addis Ababa) - Chairperson of the Commission of the African Union, Alpha Oumar Konare, traveled to Sudan on Monday, AU said.

Konare is expected to visit El Fashir, North Darfur State, to bid farewell and pay tribute to the personnel of the African Union Mission in the Sudan (AMIS), AU told ENA in a statement on Monday.

He is also scheduled to meet with President Omar Hassan Al Bashir during his visit in Khartoum.

Konare is accompanied by the Commissioner for Peace and Security, Said Djinnit and other AU officials.

Konare’s visit comes a week ahead of the formal transfer of authority from AMIS to the African Union/United Nations Hybrid Operation in Darfur (UNAMID), scheduled to take place in El Fashir on 31 December 2007.
