Addis Ababa, August 31, 2007 (Addis Ababa) - Some 500,000 quintals of wheat has so far been distributed among the public in the efforts of the government to stabilize grain market in the country, Ethiopian grain trade enterprise said.Enterprise general manager, Berhane Hailu told ENA that the stated amount of wheat was distributed among the public since April 9, 2007.
Berhane said 290,000 quintals of wheat was sold to the public through 76 distribution centers set up in 10 sub-cities in Addis Ababa City.
Similarly, market stabilization activity was being carried out through 46 distribution centers established in 11 regional towns.
Berhane said the selling of wheat would continue until the coming harvest season. There is a sufficient stock of wheat presently.
Low income community members have become beneficiaries from the market stabilization activity. A total of 670,000 family heads have already become beneficiaries.
The government has so far subsidized a total of 60 million Birr to stabilize the grain market.
